Thiruvananthapuram, the city of the Snake God, is the Capital of Kerala State and is situated at south India. The city is a blend of modern and traditional architecture. Named after the fabled Serpent God 'Anantha' on whom Sri Anantha Padmanabhan (Lord Vishnu) reclines, the city is built on seven hills. It is an ancient city with tradition dating back to 1000 BC. Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of Raja of Travancore in 1750. Caressed by the Arabian Sea at the west, Thiruvananthapuram is a popular transit destination for Indians and foreigners alike who like to visit south India. This city and district are popularly known by its anglicized name -Trivandrum.

Thiruvananthapuram is an ancient city that had trading links with the other parts of the world. Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple, a landmark of Thiruvananthapuram, is 2000 years old. King Marthandavarma, the erstwhile founder of Travancore made Thiruvananthapuram his capital. After Marthandavarma, it remained the capital of Travancore and after independence, became the capital of State of Travancore-Cochin. In 1956, when Kerala state was formed, Thiruvananthapuram was again chosen as the capital of Kerala, the "God's own Country".
Thiruvananthapuram, the southern most district of Kerala, is bordered by the Kollam district on the north and Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu on the east and south respectively. The city has grown as a tourist and commercial centre, with the International airport becoming the main gateway into Kerala. Being the state capital, it also throbs with political activity. Thiruvananthapuram and its famous beaches are one of the top tourist destinations in India.
Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state of Kerala is a beautiful seaside city built on seven hills. It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland spreading over a total of 2,192sq.km.

The best season to visit Thiruvananthapuram is during September to May.
It is divided into four Talukas: Thiruvananthapuram, Chirayinkil, Nedumangad, and Neyyattinkara. The urban bodies in the district are the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Attingal, Neyyattinkara, Varkala and Nedumangad municipalities.

One of the other major landmarks in the city is the Government Seceratariat. This white colored building that was built by the Kings of Travancore is the seat of power. The central Durbar hall was the assembly used to meet during the imperial rule.

The climate of Thiruvananthapuram like the rest of Kerala can be classified as in equatorial type of climate. It is hot and humid but in comparison to other inland cities, the ocean makes the climate quite pleasant. From June to Sept. it experiences torrential rains brought by the monsoon clouds. However from October to February, the climate remains relatively dry and cool and it is the best period to visit the city.
Tourist season of this distric is mainly August to May.

To Reach Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram is well connected by air, rail and road. There are air links to almost all the countries in the Gulf, besides being well connected to the rest of India. South East Asia is connected through a daily air-link to Singapore. Thiruvananthapuram is a Railway Division office and an important Railway Station. There are daily trains to Delhi, Bombay, Chennai, and Bangalore and local train services to all points in Kerala.

By Air: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is linked by flights to Cochin, Madras, Delhi, Goa and Bombay. International flights also operate from here. The International Airports are situated 7 km away from the city.

By Rail: There are trains from various places in India. Trains to various places are accessible from Trivandrum Central and Trivandrum Pettah rail way stations.

By Road: Long distance buses depart from the Central Bus Station (KSRTC, Thampanoor bus terminal), opposite the Railway station.
